Mercedes Cruz - My Writing Process

What am I working on?
I am working on my first novel "Plato Sucio" (working title). I am trying to keep my characters as real to NYC Latinos as I can without giving into stereotypes.

How does my work differ from others in its genre?
I would like to think that my work differs from others in that I have mainly Latino characters.  Although I was once told by a romance writing professor that the ethnicity of the characters should not be an issue or make the novel any different. I strongly dis-agreed with that professor. Just like people in different socio-economic backgrounds differ in experiences, there is no doubt that ethnicity plays a role in the characters life. Yes of course assimilation is a natural accruing process when it comes to lifestyle. However I strongly feel that my characters embody both the American side where they where born and raised and their parents nationality.

Why do I write what I do?
I write because I find it therapeutic; it helps me release the thoughts I have running around in my mind. Some people use gloves and a punching bag, I use a pen and paper and sometimes my hands and laptop. When I started writing I just wanted to write romance I did not choose a genre, I sort of just fell into Erotica.

How does my writing process work?
I make it a habit to write daily, some days I don't get to but I add it to my calendar and make it the last thing I do at night. I also don't answer calls or get up from my seat until I finish writing the amount of time I said I would. By using a timer I control how long my writing session will be.
